Filing a Business License Application in the City of Escondido

If you are a business owner or are planning to open your own business in the City of Escondido there are very important pieces of information that you need to know! Here are some to keep in mind when filing your Business License Application with the City of Escondido.

What is a Business License?

This is the registration of your entity in the city you will be conducting business. Every city has different requirements and regulations surrounding businesses within their city limits, therefore, it is a good idea to be aware or any that may affect the way you do business.

Is a Business License Required in the City of Escondido?

A business license is required to conduct business in the City of Escondido whether the location of your business is commercial or home-based.

Difference between Commercial and Home-based Businesses

The applications for commercial locations and home-based locations of your business requires different information about your business, the owner(s) and your business location, therefore, it is important to make sure you are filling out and filing the correct one.

Home-based businesses are required to submit a supplemental form and acknowledge the regulations surrounding your business pursuant to Article 44 of the Escondido Zoning Code. This is to ensure owners are aware of regulations that are applicable to them when conducting business from a residence.

Commercial businesses are required to submit a supplemental Environmental Compliance Form where business owners must disclose their business operation, materials used for the business, and their purpose,to ensure compliance with Escondido’s Environmental and Safety protocols.

What Are the Business License Application Fees ?

The application fee is based on your estimated gross income provided on the application. This is an estimate, not accounting for taxes, of the income expected to be made in the first year of your business.  

The fee is dependent on multiple variables assigned by the City of Escondido, the Business License Department recommends calling (760)839-4659 to determine the fee before sending your application.  

Currently, the City of Escondido does not accept application fees or renewal fees online or over the phone, therefore it must be mailed in to the Escondido Business License Department.  

Can You Mail in Your Application?

The determined fee must be enclosed in the form of a check with your application when sent to the City of Escondido’s Business License Division to be received and processed. Also, ensure that the name of your business is in the memo line of your check before it is mailed in.

The application will be received in the mail to the address you provided on the application. Renewal fee deadlines and notices will also be received at this address, if applicable.
